Brother MFC-9970CDW Color Laser Printer Review

The most obvious difference from this printer from that underneath is the 130mm touch screen, and 20-button speed-dial fax pads. Between them, these two components take two-thirds of the engine control panel and touch screen sensitive and positive to touch.

Large, easy-to-read icons and a well-designed menu make it easy to access features such as safe print and print directly from the front panel USB socket. Another third is made with number keys, light mode buttons, and others to start and stop work.

The A4 scanner, complete with a 50-sheet Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), has a folding paper feed and a full-duplex scanner head so that you can copy single-sided and two-page combinations.

In addition to USB & 10/100 Ethernet, this printer supports wireless connections and automatic settings through systems such as AOSS (AirStation One-Touch Secure System) from Buffalo Technologies. Drivers for Windows and OS X provided, and Linux support is also available from the Brother website. A complete copy of Nuance PaperPort 12 provided for Windows users.

All four toner cartridges are pre-installed, although you must remove the cut and the plastic packaging tape before running the machine. Separate drums, transfer belts, and waste toner units are different consumables.

Performance

The main thing that you pay extra for a laser printer is speed, and the MFC-9970CDW is rated 28ppm in black and color. Although we can confirm that this prints black pages as quickly as printed colors, we cannot reach the specified speed. Our five-page black text print is complete in 27 seconds, giving a rate of 11.1 ppm, and this is the same as when printing with the toner saver turned on, this closest machine reaches draft mode.

Duplex printing is standard on this machine, and a 20-page duplex printed on ten sheets produces a very credible speed of 12.8 sides per minute. Even better, it only takes eight more seconds for a 20-page duplex copy of the ADF. Single-pass, duplex scanners are a significant factor in this low copy time.

Working through mathematics provides a cost per ISO 2.8p black page and a price per ISO 10.7p color page. The cost of black pages is 0.5 p, both cheaper than most other multi-function color lasers that we have tested recently, and the cost of color pages closer to 2 p is less than from one of the same machines.

Conclusion

Although the purchase price of the MFC-9970CDW may be a little high, given the actual throughput speed that we measure, there is no doubt that the feature set, print quality, and printing costs are in line with the standard. With duplex and single-pass printing, duplex copying, and extensive one-press speed dialing, safe and direct distribution, easy-to-use wireless connection, and wide-aspect touch screen, this is a strong competitor in all medium-sized working groups.
