Canon Pixma MP990 Printer Review

The Design

The Pixma MP990 is essentially an enhanced version of the Pixma MP560 that we have reviewed, so it is not surprising that both printers share very similar design views. For starters, they are both multifunctional printers, and until the smart types of scientists find new ways to scan documents that don’t involve large glass plates, they will all look big and box-shaped, no matter who the vendor is. MP990 is very large and box-shaped, measuring 470x385x199mm, and even slightly larger when all trays extended. Like the MP560, controls are centered on the scroll wheel, although the MP990 uses larger wheels and a larger 3.8-inch TFT LCD to display rotation control, which focused rather than on the side.

The Features

The MP990 feature set includes printing, copying, and scanning. Sorry business types, there are no faxes here, although, at a price point of AU $ 449, it might expect to make sense. That is not a printer for those who want to print quality images, and with the inclusion of CD printing and slide/film scanning, it published in the creative crowd.

The scanner is a CCD type with a scanning resolution of 4800x9600dpi, and is capable of scanning film and slides with an adapter provided up to six film frames and four slides at once. At the front of the connection, the MP990 connected via USB, Ethernet, or wireless cable. Bluetooth is technically capable, but you have to spend extra money on a Bluetooth adapter to make it happen.

Installing the MP990 is a pretty casual affair, which is a great way to say that it’s a bit slow, not much on the physical installation side, but on the software side. The default installation is very slow, primarily because of all the additional printer utility packages that Canon suspects you want. We recommend choosing to install custom and mark the bits that you need unless you need a lot of time thinking.

Printing text pages, MP990 manages one page within nine seconds, and an average of 10 pages per minute is in standard black coverage. We note while calculating the time that the printer tends to take a long lag between the printed pages. It might be a readjustment to avoid paper jams, or the buffer is full. We are not sure, but the effect is slower than the overall print time because switching to concept speed only sees the smallest improvement to an average of eight seconds for one concept page and 11 pages printed in one minute. Print quality is outstanding under normal conditions, and predictably light in draft mode. Since Canon only rates the printer around 11.9ipm, ten pages for real-world documents aren’t too bad. Of course, this is not too fast, but at least it does not disappoint.

Canon Pixma MP990 Cartridge

There is always a trade-off between speed and quality in terms of inkjet printing. Pixma MP990 crosses its edge; compared to many printers that are rated “capable of photos,” it is a rather quiet printer in terms of pure speed, but some printers will match the photo chops too.

The Bad

  • Average print speeds
  • Installs a tonne of add-on packages
  • Weird print pauses make print speeds even slower

The Good

  • Wi-Fi printing
  • Excellent photo printing
  • CD/DVD printing capability. Slide/film scanning

Pixma MP990 should appeal to those who want their photo types in good quality, but they’ll need a bit patience to go along with it.
