Oki B710dn Drivers, Software, Manual Settings – The Oki B710 monochrome laser printer must be taken to a large, busy office like a fish to the water. Cost at $ 775 (as of May 13, 2011), is built like a tank, it has an extraordinary duty cycle of 250,000 pages per month, and page costs are shallow. However, the speed and quality of the results support PostScript rather than the more common PCL printer language. The Dell 5230dn offers a little bit more speed & even more paper capacity but at a higher price.
Installation Process
Setting up the B710dn is easy. One notable exception: After you have installed the printer on a PC (but not on a Mac), you must enable the automatic duplexing function manually. Even worse, the documentation doesn’t mention this requirement; we have to search the Oki Website for an answer.
The B710dn includes a 150-sheet multipurpose tray & a 550-sheet letter/legal tray. An additional 550-sheet tray costs $ 312. You can easily access the toner/drum drum combination by turning over the 500-sheet output bin. You can reach the remaining paper path by merely removing the paper tray or folding the automatic duplexer at the back of the unit.
The High-quality construction is in contrast to a limited one-year warranty; on this model, you will not find thin and cheap plastic found in many other printers today.
Performance
The text quality is as good as you would expect: sharp and printed in jet black and shiny. While graphics quality recognized as a low priority for monochrome printers, the B710dn graphics output also depends on the driver – it suffers from terrible cross-hatching in graphics using PCL or PCL6 drivers.
Switching to the PostScript driver offers a significant improvement. You can switch between 600 dpi and 1200 dpi for graphics (but not for text), although we see a slight increase from doing so.
The cost of consumables for the B710dn is meager. A combination of 15,000 pages of toner/drum cartridge costs $ 301, or economical 2 cents per page. Higher capacity toner cartridges are available for other models in this product line, but not for the B710dn we tested.
The Oki B710dn Monochrome laser printer is an excellent printer for large offices and other heavy usage scenarios. We want to see a more extended warranty. Regardless, speed, sturdy construction, and low consumption costs are inviting attributes.
